Self-Care Tips for Busy Moms

There’s nothing more important than taking good care of yourself. And if you’re a busy mum, then you know exactly what I’m talking about.

Self-care is an essential part of being a successful parent. It helps you maintain your sanity while juggling everything else in life.

What is Self-Care?

Simply put Self-care is taking steps to ensure you look after your physical, mental, and emotional needs.

As described by the World Health Organisation, Self-care is the ability of individuals, families, and communities to:

Self-care has been given the perception that it is selfish and this is far from the truth.

In order to look after all elements of your life to ensure optimal health it is important to ensure you take care of yourself and this is where self-care comes in.

Self-care involves looking after your overall health including nutrition, fitness, hygiene, emotional and spiritual well-being.

Being able to assess your thoughts and feelings, and knowing how to deal with them is essential for reducing and maintaining stress levels.

There are many ways to implement self-care into your daily life. Below are some self-care tips on how you can achieve self-care in your life.

How to Achieve Self-Care

Achieving self-care doesn’t just happen. It takes planning and scheduling to make it happen.

If you don’t make time in your schedule for self-care, chances are you become busy and forget. Days go by and you still haven’t achieved this important goal.

Self-care can be achieved in as little as 10 minutes a day. As long as you are enjoying an activity that helps you to relax, de-stress, and ultimately gives you peace of mind that’s all that matters.

To help you achieve this, try using a daily planner or a tool that will help you to set aside time during your busy day to ensure you remember and allocate time.

Self-Care Tips

Here are some helpful tips to help you take better care of yourself.

Make Yourself a Priority

The first of my self-care tips is to ensure you are making yourself a priority.

As a busy mom, you probably put everyone else’s needs first before yourself, which then, in turn, makes it easy to forget about yourself and your needs.

Creating a habit of scheduling and setting aside time for yourself is a great way to achieve self-care. This can make you feel recharged, refreshed and leave you feeling amazing.

Plan to Achieve

As previously mentioned, You need to actively plan and schedule tasks each day to ensure you have prioritised some time in order to achieve a particular task.

Planning to achieve tasks is an important part of achieving goals. The first step is to identify tasks that are important and relevant to the day’s goal.

Try planning and scheduling some time to do things you enjoy to help achieve your goals, stay motivated and help you stay focussed.

Time Audit

Conducting a time audit of your day can help you identify where your time is going.

This can help you also identify if there are any things that can be changed up or amended that may be time wasters.

For example, social media can be a real time waster if you are scrolling countlessly for no reason during your day.

Instead, you can use this time better to implement self-care activities, instantly making time.

Planning Tools

There are numerous planning tools that can help you easily plan and schedule self-care into your daily routine.

Using a daily planner or journal is one way to do this. Digital or the good old fashion pen and paper dairy are great ways to plan your day and tasks.

Another planning tool would be an app. Conveniently used on your mobile phone, this makes for an easily accessible way to plan whenever and wherever.

Whichever method you decide, as long as you find it easy and manageable to plan and schedule to ensure you stick to it.

Make it a Habit

You can have a plan in place but unless you make it a habit to action and achieve each day, it can be forgotten.

Getting into the habit of planning and scheduling self-care into your daily routine will ensure this becomes second nature and more streamlined in your life.

Prioritise Sleep

Sleep is an important factor and is linked to many benefits:

Sleep deprivation has been linked to anxiety, stress, and depression. Without adequate sleep, the above-mentioned benefits are harder to achieve.

Sleep is essential for maintaining optimal health and well-being.

Ensuring you get enough sleep each night is important to maintain. Making sure you aim to get 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night is another of my self-care tips to implement.

Identifying Signs of Stress

Stress can cause headaches, stomach aches, fatigue, and other health problems.

Identifying the early signs of stress and knowing how to deal with it can ensure that your stress doesn’t get more serious and create other health problems.

Eat well

Eating healthy foods like fruits and vegetables, healthy fats, protein, and whole foods can help ensure you are fueling your body with the essential nutrients your body needs.

Eating well can also boost your energy levels and keep you focused and fuller throughout the day.

Skip the Scales

Another of my self-care tips is to be aware that reading the numbers on the scales first thing in the morning can bring your mood down if the numbers are not what you wanted to see.

This can then set your mood for the whole day. Instead, try other methods to evaluate your weight loss goals like taking before and after photos, or try taking measurements for more precise and accurate results.

Short Mini Breaks Throughout the Day

It might seem impossible to take time out when you’re juggling so much, but there are ways to make sure you still get some quality time for yourself.

Try scheduling regular mini breaks during the day where you can relax and unwind. This could mean going for a walk, having lunch with friends, focusing on breathing techniques, or even just sitting down for five minutes to read a book.

Self-Care Tips – Final Thoughts

If you want to feel better, eat healthier, and look better, then you need to take care of yourself first.
